This is me. Jenny Brown. Jennifer S. Brown. Mom. Hey you. Take your pick.
This is my life. I write. I read. I make marshmallows. I write and read a little more. Occasionally I care for my two kids.
My adult years have been spent either editing or writing, first in the world of traditional publishing at Cloverdale Press, then at Putnam Berkley (which is now Penguin Putnam). Then I moved to the glamorous world of Internet, spending four glorious years on the editorial team of “that little Internet bookstore,” as my friend billed it in those days: Amazon.com. I have a BFA in filmmaking from NYU and an MFA in fiction from the University of Washington.
My novel, Modern Girls, set in 1935 in the Lower East Side of New York, is about a Russian-born Jewish mother and her American-born unmarried daughter. Each discovers that she is expecting, although the pregnancies are unplanned and unwanted, in this story about women’s roles, standards, and choices, set against the backdrop of the impending war.
Modern Girls will be published by NAL in the spring of 2016. My agent is Laney Katz Becker of Lippincott Massie McQuilkin.
This is my life. Or at least pieces of it. Because some it simply isn’t fit for reading. Welcome.
